Profile: Bardenas Reales

Spain is known for its diverse landscape – its sunny southern coastline and lush northern mountains collide with its central agricultural plains. Often left out of that idyllic image, however, are Spain’s badlands. Nestled in a southeastern valley of the Navarra region, the Spanish badlands, known as the Bardenas Reales, are defined by massive sandy plains, deep gorges and steep, expansive plateaus. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Bardenas Reales are a sight to be seen. Pro tip: rent a mountain bike if you go, and take in the landscape on two wheels.
