In this interview, la Familia Romo, a host family for a LITA 2025 student from a small town in Castilla y León, shares their experience.
¿Cómo os sentisteis cuando os propusieron acoger a un estudiante americano en casa?
Para nosotros fué una noticia maravillosa. Siempre hemos sido una familia viajera a la que nos gusta compartir experiencias con otras culturas y costumbres. Mis hijas están acostumbradas a viajar, a ser independientes y a respetar a los demás.
How did you feel when you were asked to host an American student in your home?
For us, it was wonderful news. We have always been a traveling family who likes to share experiences with other cultures and customs. My daughters are used to traveling, being independent and respecting others.
¿Cómo fue el primer encuentro con el/la estudiante?
Muy emocionante… Todos estábamos deseando que llegase ese momento. Cuando bajaron del autobús, después de tanto retraso por la avería del mismo, nos sentimos muy agradecidos. Los estudiantes tenían cara de agotados, y estábamos deseando recibirla para que viniese con nosotros a casa a que pudiese descansar. Sin embargo, nada más llegar Mattie a casa nos dijo que lo que quería era irse con mi hija mayor a dar un paseo por el pueblo a conocer a sus amigos, así que nos pareció una idea maravillosa y la dejamos ir.
What was it like to first meet your student?
Very exciting… We were all looking forward to that moment. When they got off of the bus, after so much delay due to its breakdown, we felt very grateful. The students looked exhausted, and we were eager to welcome her so that she could come home with us and rest. However, as soon as Mattie was at home she told us that what she wanted was to go with my older daughter for a walk around town to meet her friends, so we thought it was a wonderful idea and we let her go.
¿Hubo alguna actividad o momento especial que compartisteis en familia y que recordáis con mucho cariño?
El último día cuando los estudiantes leyeron unas palabras de agradecimiento a las familias.
Was there any activity or special moment that you shared as a family and that you remember fondly?
The last day when the students read some words of gratitude to their families.
¿Qué creéis que se llevó el estudiante de vuestra familia y de vuestra cultura?
La importancia de las relaciones sociales fuera y dentro de casa y las relaciones familiares y nuestra forma de vivir. Sí que es cierto, que los estudiantes han venido en verano que es cuando más estamos en la calle con amigos (y en invierno no es exactamente así).
What do you think the student took away from your family and your culture?
The importance of social relationships inside and outside of home, family relationships and our way of living. It is true, though, that the students came in the summer, which is when we spend the most time outside with friends (and in winter it’s not exactly like that).
¿Y vosotros? ¿Qué aprendisteis del/ de la estudiante?
A no confiar en los estereotipos y las ideas preconcebidas de otras culturas
And you? What did you learn from the student?
To not trust stereotypes and the preconceived ideas about other cultures.
¿Cómo se llevaron vuestros hijos con el estudiante? ¿Hubo alguna conexión especial?
Maravillosamente bien. Con quién más estuvo fue con mi hija mayor ya que tenían una edad parecida. Pero con Nora, la pequeña, también se llevó muy bien!
How did your children get along with the student? ¿Was there a special connection?
Wonderfully well. She spent the most time with my older daughter since they were of a similar age, but she also got along very well with Nora, the little one.
¿Qué plato típico preparasteis para el/la estudiante que os hizo ilusión compartir? Croquetas y tortilla de patata. ¿Le gustó? Síii.
¿What traditional dish did you prepare for the student that you were excited to share? Croquetas and tortilla de patata. Did she like it? Yesss.
¿Qué ha sido lo más gratificante de ser madre/padre de acogida?
El poder ayudar a sentirse más agusto en España a Mattie y a echar lo menos posible a su familia.
What has been the most gratifying part of being a host family?
Being able to help Mattie feel more comfortable in Spain and feel as little homesickness as possible.
¿Diríais que esta experiencia ha dejado huella en vuestra familia?
Creo que no lo olvidaremos nunca. Mis dos hijas están deseando poder participar en otra experiencia parecida, ya sea como estudiantes o como monitores. Y a nosotros no nos importaría volver a participar.
Would you say that this experience had left a mark in your family?
I think we will never forget it. My two daughters are eager to participate in another similar experience, either as students or group leaders. And we wouldn’t mind participating again.
¿Qué le diríais a otra familia española que esté considerando participar como familia de acogida de LITA?
Que no lo dude, que es una experiencia que nunca olvidarán. La organización es extremadamente cuidadosa con todos los detalles y nos han hecho sentir muy bien en todo momento.
What would you say to another Spanish family who is considering participating as a LITA host family?
That they shouldn't hesitate, that it’s an experience that they will never forget. The organization is extremely careful with every detail and has made us feel very good at all times.
